Garfield Orchestra students had a great showing at the Washington State Solo & Ensemble Contest, held in Ellensburg, April 26th and 27th.
Congratulations to the following four students for placing in the top three for Washington state in their instrument categories:
- 1st Place – Sho K (cello)
- 2nd Place – Corinna S (trumpet)
- 2nd Place – Milo P (percussion – mallets)
- 3rd Place – Sofie F (bassoon)
Garfield Orchestras are preparing for another exciting year of music making! If you would like to be involved, we want to ensure that you are placed in the proper ensemble to best foster your growth as a musician. In order to do so, we want to hear you play. Here are the important details:
- All Freshman String players should enroll in Chamber Orchestra. No audition is required: this class is designed to welcome our Freshman string class to the program and to create the social and technical familiarity necessary for our orchestra family to grow in successive years.
- Two of our ensembles, Concert and Symphony Orchestra, meet as a Full Orchestra – including Winds, Brass, and Percussion in addition to Strings. In full orchestra literature, winds, brass, and percussion instruments are treated as soloists. As such, ALL Wind, Brass, and Percussion players must audition to be placed in these ensembles. Concert and Symphony Orchestras are open to Freshman Wind, Brass, and Percussion players by audition.

Last night, Garfield Orchestra celebrated the silver screen with its annual Pops Concert. Over 170 student musicians played music from Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, Frozen and more. What a fantastic evening!
The concert also kicked off our Annual Drive. Continuing our legacy of having an award winning program depends on your continued support. A significant part of our mission is to subsidize orchestra activities so that all students can fully participate.
Your donation funds instrumental coaching, music scores/licensing, festival costs, scholarships, and the repair and replacement of school instruments. In addition, this summer we are hoping to renovate our instrument storage room. Next year, we are looking forward to having concerts and programs for our feeder school students – future Garfield musicians!

Please read the instructions below for students traveling on the Spring Trip.
Baggage and Packing:
You are allowed one carry on and one personal item, such as a purse or backpack that can fit under the seat. Note that your suitcase should be no larger than 22″ x 14″ x 9″ (including wheels and handles). Packing list can be found here.
Students must check in with their chaperone by 7:00 AM. Alaska Airlines will open desks specifically for our group. These desks will be the last row in the Alaska Airlines check-in area closest to the center of the airport.
Upon checking with their chaperones, they will get 2 luggage tags. One is for their suitcase and one is for their instrument. After tagging their instruments and luggage, students will be directed to get their boarding passes.
Students who play trumpet, French horn, bassoon and trombone will check their instruments at the check-in counter. Students who play violin and viola will check in their suitcases at the gate. Someone from FOGO will be at both counters to pay for the baggage fees.
We are scheduled to return to Sea-Tac Airport at 8:30 PM. Students must be released to a parent/guardian (no Uber, Lyft, Link). Upon the group’s return, we are asking parents/guardians to park their cars and check in with their student’s chaperone before leaving. Carpooling is encouraged, but please check in with the students’ chaperones before leaving.

Join FOGO, Mr. Kolk and all your Garfield Orchestra friends at the annual ‘Welcome Back BBQ’ (which is actually a pizza party) on Sunday, September 23rd, starting at 4 PM in the Garfield High School Orchestra Room
FOGO will provide the pizza and drinks and we ask families to bring a side dish/salad or dessert to share.
We will start the afternoon in the Orchestra room and will enjoy food and drinks outside in the courtyard. Come meet the new Garfield Orchestra Director, Bryan Kolk, learn about what’s in store for this year’s orchestras and chat with the FOGO board.
