May 21, 22 – Incoming 9th grade Winds/Brass Percussion/Piano/Harp Auditions (starting at 3:45pm in 219)

May 23, 24 –Garfield Orchestra Winds/Brass/Percussion/Piano/Harp Auditions (for current GHS students)

May 29, 30, 31—Garfield Orchestra Viola/Cello/Bass Auditions (for current GHS students)

June 4, 5, 6—Garfield Orchestra Violin Auditions (for current GHS students)

*Auditions will take place for existing GHS students in the morning, during advisory, 6th period, and after school—sign up sheets will go up in May*

Audition requirements for winds/brass:

Two octave Major scale

Two octave Minor scale

2 minute of a solo

Sight Reading


Audition requirements for strings:

3 octave Major scale

3 octave Minor scale

2 minute of a solo



Percussion:  (see or email me for audition time)

Short solos on snare, timpani, and mallets

Sight Reading

Friends of Garfield Orchestras Family Social — Sunday, September 24

Friends of Garfield Orchestras invites all students and parents to a Family Social!  

Sunday, September 24, 4:00-7:00 pm
Informational Meeting at 4:30 pm sharp in the Garfield Orchestra Room, followed by pizza/potluck dinner in courtyard.
Pizza, utensils, plates, cups and napkins will be provided!

If your last name begins with:

·         A – H:   Please bring a Salad

·         I – O:    Please bring Drinks

·         P – Z:   Please bring Dessert

This will be a great opportunity for new and returning families to meet Kim Roy, to get to know each other, and to find out more information about orchestra performances and activities planned for the year.

Information for joining the Garfield Orchestras in 2017-18

Symphony Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, Freshmen Strings

New strings DO NOT NEED an audition. ALL 9th Grade string players join the Freshmen Strings class.

New Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion

Auditions for new woodwinds, brass & percussion after school – Date TBA. First come basis. (I’d like to hear a major and minor scale; 2 mins. of a solopiece or etude; and 1 min. of sightreading)

  • PE REQUIREMENT can be waived with Music participation.
  • Occupational Education credit available for juniors and seniors.
  • Fine Arts credit available for freshmen and sophomores.
  • 15 orchestra members are currently taking two (or more) music classes.
